All of us have heard that we are connected to nature and how important these connections are, but do we always realize when we are using natural resources in our lives?
Products from the natural environment are not only in our food, fuel, and clothing, but also vital in places such as our medicine cabinets or even the solutions used in a genetics lab. Nature shapes our modern lives in unexpected ways. It can give us the tools to help not only ourselves but to restore the ecosystems around us.
Grace Forthaus is an invasive species biologist and conservationist who became interested in these intertwined relationships after working in environmental restoration and later in an ecological genetics lab.
Lecture begins at 7pm.

Our famous Underberg-inspired collaboration supergroup ale is back for its third year - this time with a refreshed recipe! We began with our classic blend of barley and wheat saison, and fermented in stainless. After primary fermentation, we blended in some of our house sour beer to add wild cultures for added depth. The result is a beer that starts off bright and saison-forward, but will develop richer funk, complexity and acidity over the months and years as it ages. These tweaks will also let different herbs shine throughout its development!
Underbru is a three way annua collaboration between Speciation, Underberg, and Eclipse on Tap!

“While utilizing the landscape’s natural forms and textures, I draw upon visual cues from past encounters to achieve a balance between realism and abstraction. My intent is to evoke memories and the sense of a place and time while portraying the interrupted cycles existing throughout the natural world’s various ecosystems.
The bright Cerulean Warbler requires large tracts of mature deciduous forests. Due to years of habitat loss and fragmentation, these warblers are rapidly declining. Although the Cerulean Warbler primarily breeds further South, there still remain a few locations throughout Michigan which have the increasingly rare niche habitat to support these vivid, sky-blue birds.“ - Justin Kellner

The next book for book club is... Vanishing Treasures by Katherine Rundell. The meeting date is September 11th, from 7-9pm at the taproom.
This urgent, inspiring book of essays dedicated to 23 unusual and underappreciated creatures is a clarion call insisting that we look at the world around us with new eyes—to see the magic of the animals we live among, their unknown histories and capabilities, and above all how lucky we are to tread the same ground as such vanishing treasures.
I was introduced to Katherine Rundell by my 8 year old son! Earlier this summer we blew through her fantasy novel Impossible Creatures in just a few days. It was one of those books where he was asking me to read to him while he was swinging on the swings, and even floating in the lake! We couldn’t put it down. I’m hoping some of that magic will be captured in her nature nonfiction work as well.
The book is available for purchase in the taproom right now! You can also pick up a copy at @booksandmortar

Katy Pinke's songs are self-examinations—cerebral and unsparing, but reaching toward a more promising future. The Manhattan-based singer-songwriter, painter, and theater-maker's nimble soprano evokes the precision, humor, and melancholy of forbearers like The Roches and Connie Converse.
The Temperances are a Grand Rapids-based trio blending heartfelt songwriting with haunting vocal harmonies. Formed by solo artists Marley Kaye, Audrey Pearson, and Olivia Vargas, the group emerged from spontaneous on-stage collaborations into a project rooted in vulnerability, balance, and friendship. Their stripped-down, emotionally rich performances explore the unspeakable through song—where harmony becomes both sound and sentiment.
